This is a loose collection of software, applications, systems and other stuff I have picked up over the years.
Roughly grouped and non-comprehensive.

I tend to have two triggers for learning something:

  • I come across it and think “this seems cool, I want to know more” (Rust, ArgoCD)
  • it solves / is a problem I am currently having (looking through Kafka implementation details)

As a result, my knowledge has some odd gaps and some unexpectedly deep spots.

Languages

My main “toolbox” consists of:

  • JS + React for GUIs
  • Kotlin for backends and general applications
  • Rust for embedded / low level / high performance tasks

Other languages I have used:
Go, Scala, PHP, C and C++ (I prefer Rust), C#, Objective-C, Java, Basic (the Free-, Quick- and Visual- versions), Python, Excel, various fictional Assembly languages for games and probably more I can’t recall.

DBs and Messaging Queues

I have worked with a variety of databases, both traditional RDBMSs (Oracle, MariaDB, MySQL, Postgres, SQLite) and NoSQL ones (Cassandra, Neo4j, Redis).

I am also familiar with Google’s Pub/Sub, and have delved deeper into Kafka’s inner workings than seems reasonable.

Infrastructure

Everything that will run on a server, I build as a Docker image by default.
All applications I run in my homelab are defined as Docker compose projects (where possible).

For VMs, I have a machine running Proxmox.
Besides a VM acting as a Docker host, it also runs a 3-node k3s cluster, using ArgoCD for deployments.

My personal projects also live in my homelab, on a Gitea instance that is also set up for CI/CD (it built and pushed this website!)

Making

For design, I use FreeCAD for mechanical parts, and KiCad for electronics. I have used Fusion 360 and Onshape for CAD in the past. I know my way around a soldering iron, and can use an oscilloscope for basic troubleshooting.

Most of my projects use an ESP32 as the microcontroller, with firmware written in Rust.

My preferred method for bringing things into the physical world is 3D printing and laser cutting.
