I’m a software engineer currently living in Tokyo.
Professionally, I ended up working mostly on web applications: first as a full-stack JavaScript/Java/Oracle developer on energy market applications, then writing Kotlin to run identity systems at Rakuten. If you live in Japan, you’ve probably used one of my services.
After work, I dabble in a variety of things loosely related to making stuff: programming, CAD, 3D printing, electronics and PCB design, homelabbing, laser cutting, flight simming, and more. You can often catch me at the Tokyo Hackerspace open houses. Just don’t ask me to actually finish a project ;)
I strongly believe that “done is better than perfect”.
Professional Experience
So far I have professionally worked on two major systems.
cpx.Energy
A SaaS for the European energy sector. Build as a large Java and JS monolith (1+ million LOC) with complex business logic, and an even more complex web of entities. It predates the introduction of Spring Boot by more than a decade, and thus has large amounts of homegrown solutions to problems such as database migrations and build systems.
Rakuten Membership Platform
The central user and access management system that powers all of Rakuten’s services. Relatively simple business logic, but spread over a vast web of microservices with complicated interactions and a large number of legacy systems / decisions to deal with. Making developments more of an organizational / human challenge than a technical one.
